Antebellum

Remember me before the war
When we were young and happy
When we sit side by side
Painting rainbows
On a starry black night.

Remember me before the war
When we would just sit by the window pane
Watch the pouring rain
Sipping black coffees
Listening to old melodies.

Remember me before the war
When it's raining hard
But I don't need a rainbow
Just that curve from your mouth
So contagious
It makes me smile back.

Remember me before the war
But someday your name will be just another word
I will no longer look when I hear it.
No longer cry over the memories
I'll just smile over the tale that was told...
All before the war.
